Veterans Information
(page currently being developed)
AIPER has a 1 hour program that we can do for your group or lend you materials. It includes the first 35 minutes of an HBO documentary "Alive Day" about some of our most severly injured veterans and a CBS news report on suicide rates along with supporting materials about the challenges that veterans who might look unharmed but are dealing with. We're in the process of trying to create alliances with others (regardless of what your view is on the war) to support fundamental reforms in our veterans support systems to assure that the cost of war isn't continually put upon our veterans. Contact us by email or 480-967-3880, if you'd like more information or would like to schedule it.
Here's some helpful links to more information on the plight of our veterans, with special attention to our veterans from the Iraq war.
(Note: as a 501c3 organization AIPER does not support any of the candidates noted in by the PAC, but provides the link as an informational resource as it also includes numerous other links of use)
VA Watch Dog (tracks news on the Veterans Administration): http://www.vawatchdog.org/
News and op-ed Pieces of interest:
"Ray served his country, but VA isn’t serving Ray at all" by AIPER's President, Dave Wells, published in the Southeast Valley Opinions of the Arizona Republic on Wed., Nov. 14, 2007.
CBS News Reports on suicide rates among returning veterans:
USA Today Report on underestimation of head injuries:
Army Times Opinion on need to move forward with wounded warriors legislation (House and Senate have both passed it, but they haven't met in conference committee yet to come to a version to send to the President). Also included are links comparing the legislation and tracking it.
And there's so much more. From those being dishonorably discharged from the military for misconduct because they have have PTSD and are self-medicating or not receiving appropriate treatment (dishonorable discharge means they get no medical help from the VA). An article in the most recent edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds multiple measures of psychiatric problems develop in veterans months after returning home--yet the military doesn't check back proactively. We'll have more available here soon, including more links to articles.
